# Namibia green hydrogen: what is real in 2026

## Summary

Namibia's green hydrogen story is still mostly planned. The flagship Hyphen project targets a final investment decision (FID) for its first phase by the end of 2027, while renewable power projects such as the Diaz wind farm near Lüderitz are further along. Local suppliers should plan for construction-phase demand that is real but later than first announced.

## Where does the Hyphen project stand?

New Era reported on 23 September 2026 that the African Development Bank (AfDB) selected Hyphen Hydrogen Energy for a prospective US$5.93 million reimbursable grant to fund project development work needed to reach FID. The grant still needs AfDB Board approval and follows a US$10 million reimbursable grant announced in December 2025. Hyphen was one of four projects chosen from 81 proposals from 18 African countries.

The developer describes a full-scale project of about 7 GW of renewable generation, 3 GW of electrolysers and up to 2 million tonnes of green ammonia a year, with phase one targeting 1 million tonnes. It cites up to 15,000 construction jobs, about 3,000 permanent operating jobs and a 90% Namibian workforce target. Those are developer targets, not commitments. The article itself notes that substantial further financing is needed before full-scale construction.

## What renewable power is actually being built?

The NIPDB homepage lists the Diaz Wind Farm near Lüderitz as officially inaugurated on 23 October 2026, describing it as a N$1.6 billion, 50 MW project. Be careful with the capacity: a June 2025 Crown article described a 44 MW farm supplying about 6% of national electricity demand, with commissioning expected by the end of 2025. The two figures differ, so check the developer before quoting either.

NamPower, the national utility, reports on its website that it launched a 2026 to 2030 integrated strategic business plan and started work on what it calls its largest solar PV power station to date in June 2025. It also lists a memorandum of understanding with Namdeb on renewable electricity, a digital substation near Swakopmund, and a market sounding on LNG supply options for its Anixas plant.

## What does this mean for local suppliers?

Large energy projects buy services long before they sell product. As our analysis of where such projects typically spend, the likely local openings are:

- Construction support: civil works, steel, transport, accommodation and catering near sites.
- Skills: artisan training, welding, electrical and instrumentation work.
- Operations: maintenance, spares, inspection, security and logistics through Walvis Bay and Lüderitz.
- Data and monitoring tools for grid and plant performance.

Openings depend on procurement rules. NIPDB already runs a sustainable supplier database and local content platform, so registration there is a low-cost first step.

## What are the risks?

Hydrogen economics depend on offtake agreements, financing costs and electrolyser supply, none of which are settled in the sources we read. Earlier plans aimed for first-phase commissioning by the end of 2026, and the current target is end of 2027 for the investment decision alone, so timelines have slipped. The AfDB grant is prospective and reimbursable. A supplier business that depends on a single project can be stranded by a delay.

## What should a builder do?

Pick work that earns revenue with or without hydrogen. Wind and solar construction, grid upgrades and industrial maintenance all benefit from the same skills. Track FID announcements as a trigger, not a plan. Read our guides on the oil and gas local content policy and on investing in Namibia for how procurement rules are developing.

## How we compiled this

Last verified: 30 October 2026. This is original analysis written from the public sources listed below. Figures are quoted as the source reported them and dated where they are older. Where sources disagreed or an official page gave no detail, we say so rather than fill the gap. Spotted an error? Tell us through the contact page and we will correct it.
