# Future of Namibia and Africa: where to build

## Summary

This is analysis, not reporting. Across the sources we read, the strongest openings for builders in Namibia and Africa are the services around large projects, the rails of digital payment, trade logistics, and tools for informal and young workers. The weakest bets depend on a single announcement date. Each pick below shows its evidence and its uncertainty.

## What is the economic starting point?

The Bank of Namibia estimated growth of 1.7% in 2025 and forecast 2.6% for 2026 and 2.9% for 2027, led by construction, utilities, trade, financial services, public administration and uranium. It listed risks including foot-and-mouth disease in neighbouring countries and global policy volatility. A government representative has tied the Sixth National Development Plan to value addition, diversification and job creation.

## Where should builders look next?

### 1. Supply and services around energy projects

Hyphen targets a final investment decision by the end of 2027, and oil and gas decisions were expected by 2027 in early 2025 reporting. Both could create demand for logistics, maintenance, training and materials. The local content policy has no published targets yet. Evidence: moderate. Timing risk: high. Choose services that also sell to mines, ports and utilities.

### 2. Digital payments and financial tools

Namibia's instant payment solution went live in June 2026 with Bank Windhoek, Nampost and Letshego Bank Namibia in the first group. Mobile money processed more than US$2 trillion in 2025 globally. Evidence: strong. Risk: competition from banks and the pace of participation.

### 3. Trade and logistics

Namport handled 8.42 million tonnes in the year to March 2025, nearly 70% of cross-border volume came from South Africa and Zambia, and AfCFTA trading has begun. Evidence: strong on volume, thin on how many small firms export. Risk: concentration.

### 4. Agri-food value addition

Beef exports rose 52.7% in the first half of 2026 and government wants more processing in the country. Evidence: moderate. Risk: drought, disease and market access.

### 5. Applied artificial intelligence

A National AI Institute was launched in September 2026, with focus areas in water, energy, food security, health, education and public services. Evidence: early. Risk: unclear regulation and buyers.

### 6. Tools for young, informal workers

About 90% of employed young Africans have informal jobs. Evidence: strong at the continental level. Risk: low willingness to pay, high cost to reach.

## What should be avoided?

- Businesses that only work if a hydrogen or oil FID lands on a given date.
- Copying a model from a large market without checking the Namibian numbers.
- Over-reliance on grants, given the odds seen in the youth and SME schemes.

## How should a builder test an idea?

1. Name the paying customer and talk to ten of them.
2. Estimate revenue from one corridor or one sector, not the continent.
3. Check regulation and registration steps (see our company registration guide).
4. Match funding to evidence (see our funding guides).
5. Decide in advance what result would make you stop.

## What is still uncertain?

We could not verify several things: the status of the investment bill, special economic zone rules, a current oil FID, a continental AfCFTA trade figure, and Namibian angel activity. Treat them as open questions. Forecasts, including the Bank of Namibia's, are revised often.

The practical conclusion is modest. Opportunity sits in gaps between what people need and what the market provides, and evidence beats announcements. Namibia is small enough that a builder can know most of the buyers in a sector. Use that.

## How we compiled this

Last verified: 30 October 2026. This is original analysis written from the public sources listed below. Figures are quoted as the source reported them and dated where they are older. Where sources disagreed or an official page gave no detail, we say so rather than fill the gap. Spotted an error? Tell us through the contact page and we will correct it.
